    No doubt in my mind about 2, Honda cub... and CB 750. I owned bot, the CB from 1970 and the cub later as a commuter, with actually a very long commute. You cannot kill a Honda50.. mine was pushrod iron head, and just went on... and on.... and on. No oil leaks, easy maintenance.. and withstood a lot of abuse. The CB was obtained when everyone else here has 'Brit' bikes... and of course, at the time, none could match it... maybe a Bonny could marginally out accellerate it , and outhandle it.. but in no way were any of them as comfortable for long distance cruising. It did leak oil... but not what you would expect, as this was actually due to a feature on it.. a chain oiler metered through the centre of the sprocket driveshaft. Having owned a variety of 'Brit' bikes before it, I understood immediately how this bike was going to kill the British bike industry unless they changed, which unfortunately they did not.

    • @bikerdood1100
      @bikerdood1100 Годину тому

      The idea that it killed the British industry is more sound bite than historical fact to be honest The collapse of the home market was far more significant In a world sense the Cub is by far the most significant Honda with the CB really aimed at the US big bike market which is relatively small by numbers, the Asian small bike market is were Honda made their money

      @@bikerdood1100 I agree, but still think the Japanese multi cylinder flood was enough to accelerate the death. I actually owned the Honda 50after the CB, and used it for a much longer period.

    I had a CX500 in the mid 80’s and loved it, I have many fond memories of touring Scotland and elsewhere. 38 years later I’ve just got a V7 850, loving it so far but it’s early days yet, I wonder if we will make brilliant memories the way the CX did. The Guzzi just loves a good twisty road way more than I remember the CX did, not a fair comparison really due to the years between, for wrinkly me as well as the machines

    Bit confused here. In this video, the narrator is very clear to say that the engine should only be rotated in a "clockwise" direction. However, in another video I have seen, the man doing the work says the very opposite ie that the engine should only be rotated in a anti (counter) clockwise direction ua-cam.com/video/jq_yUP4fA8k/v-deo.html . Which is correct and why does it make a difference?

    • @bikerdood1100

      The engine runs backwards effectively So I’m quoting the factory recommendation

    • @stevetaylor8698
      @stevetaylor8698 14 годин тому

      @@bikerdood1100 Investigated more. The engine actually runs forwards (ie anti-clockwise) but for some reason, most probably a design mistake, the nut which is used to turn the flywheel (which has the timing mark) has a normal right hand thread. Therefore there is a possibility that if you turn the engine over in the direction in which the engine normally runs using this nut, it could become undone. However, this nut done is torqued up to 70 nm and so it is most unlikely that if will come undone by simply turning a decompressed engine over. Hope this is clear.

    My buddy had a beautiful Trident in the early '80s. One day he left the fuel tap on and went to kick start it the next morning. One of the carb float needles had started leaking and the bike burst into flames and burnt to the ground. The engine was just a melted pile of goo before it burned itself out. One of the saddest moments of my motorcycling life and certainly his.

      My only complaint about Tridents was the same one I had about Goldwings. The first time I tore both engines down for a complete rebuild, I swore it would be the last, and it was. Terribly difficult lower end to assemble compared to the ease of the twins.

    Well, the Triumphs were pretty, but not really much better than the earlier 500 and 650s. Mind you, I'm biased: I still have a '73 Norton 850 I bought new in 1975 from a dealer who was closing up shop. I bought it in the crate and assembled it mself and have done all the maintenance and repairs. The engine has been properly overhauled and everything surfaced so that it does not leak oil, balanced with upgraded bearings, Big Mikuni carb and Boyer ignition. I've still got a good stock of Isolastic pieces, and have upgraded the brakes and added Akont rims and "modern" tires. I've got a garage full of bikes, but this is the one I love most of all, and it gets more comments than anything else I own on two wheels. And I'm 86 and can still start it! My daughter (who does not ride) swears she's going to drain all the fluids and display it in her living room, if I ever die...just to remind her of her old reprobate dad! As always, good video...

I admit I'm about to sell off several of them, mostly because I'd like to be able to use that part of the garage for something other than memory storage! Plus some of those are pretty unusual and they deserve more than a few shorter rides per year. For instance, have you ever seen a Richman-framed Honda CB450? I've got a pair of those, and my English buddy Sam swears they only made 3! Keep the videos coming; I always enjoy them.

    Back in 1957 I had a 1954 MSS (took my test on it), it was a fantastic bike. As you said it'd cruse all day at 70 and return a genuine 70mpg, with its large fuel tank it would go for ever. It had a beautiful two level duel seat and one handed wheel adjustable rear suspension, the only downside were the Miller electrics. By the way it would have made the good video a really great one if you'd have given us some idea of their prices.

    I owned a W650 & would not put it on the list. Simply because I discovered that I prefer single cylinder bikes & riding round the narrower country lanes. I am now of the belief that average time to get from A to B is governed by traffic conditions & being safe. So I feel the single cylinder Royal Enfield deserves to be on the list. No, I have not riden one, but I have owned an Indian made 500cc from when they first started to import them back in the 1980s. I understand these new ones are a big improvement on those. I had mine fitted with a rear rack & saddle from new & it was the basic Black model. No silly bent tin & poor chrome. Just nice polished Aly cases to the engine & a chrome exhaust. I assume they make a model somewhat similar.

    I've got a 150cc clone of a Honda CG125. It's not the "latest and greatest" anything. However, in the half century the design has been in continuous production a whole roster of manufacturers have worked out any design and build issues. Competition for sales in marginal markets has allowed them to discover where they can and can't cut corners and still have a marketable product. I've got over a year and 7,500km on mine with no major issues. Here in the Philippines parts are plentiful and every mechanic in the country can rebuild one with three wrenches and a hammer. BTW, the country consists of over 7,000 islands. The salt air turns *everything* into a pile of rust without constant attention. My Chinese bike isn't any better or worse than the expensive brands.

    • @bikerdood1100

      @@bikerdood1100 A big bike here is 400cc. Something like the Shineray XY 400 sold here as the Motorstar Cafe 400. I'm in the Cebu metro area along with roughly two million other people. Infrastructure ranges from overloaded to nonexistent. When traffic is really compacted it's quicker to get on a bicycle. In the more rural areas the average road speed is 50 - 60 kph. It's not unusual for a paved road to devolve into ruts and egg size gravel then become concrete again anywhere from fifty meters to several km later. Fortunately I'm retired, don't have to be anywhere at a specific time, don't much care when I arrive as long as the trip was interesting.

    Before the 70s bikes were all about getting to work. As British bikes became classics it was all about looks. For me if a bikes looks right it performs right. I don't need to get on my Velocette Thruxton to get to work. I can spend hours looking at it and admiring the engineering right down to the beautiful nuts and bolts. Certain bikes are works of art. The Triumph T120 was and is now with Bloor's interpretation the ultimate in looks. When you ride any classic British bike there is a feeling you can't describe. Men our age (70's) know that feeling. I recently bought a beautiful Fat Boy and now i get that feeling for HD too. It's the feeling and the looks Baby, never mind the admiration from bystanders. If it was all about getting to work a step through 90 would suffice or even a Raleigh moped

    The 1947 RE J model 500 was an excellent bike. I rode alongside one through NSW, Victoria, SA and back to NSW. Only had to pull the head off once when a valve stuck.

    Back in the 60s I had a BSA Road Rocket and later a Super Rocket which I modified slightly with spitfire cams and 10;5 pistons at the time I borrowed a friend's standard A7 and to be honest it was a nice better ride regarding vibration and smoothness, a lesson learnt.

    If not the worst bike, the most inappropriate I ever had was a full power 1200 V Max. Inappropriate because we were living in Hong Kong and my wife and I used it to commute to the offices we worked in. Horrendous traffic and narrow bendy roads. I used to arrive at work a sweaty mess and my wife would be a gibbering wreck. Great at traffic light drag races though😁😁. Didn't keep it long.

      Don’t think commuting is in the VMax wheel house 😂

    Hm...now you've got me interested in scooters. Thanks for the great review. As an older rider... I'm thinking maybe a scooter might be a better option for me? Ride safe guys. Cheers from the States.

    A fun and interesting review. Thank you 🙂👍 As you say Honda being Honda. They know how to build a good looking quality bike that handles and performs well. The CX500 appears to be no exception. Just big enough to do well on the highway and nimble enough for around town. But I really don't like the plastic on the handlebars. It looks cheap and, well, plasticky. But other than that the CX500 looks like one awesome machine.

      Plastic on the bars was very much of its time There was a heavy car industry influence at the time with clocks that resembled car dashboards commonplace

    Nothing old and UK made is affordable in the US. Sad for us.

      Mainly because the US had most of em and then stored them away for decades Many that survived have found there way home to the UK

    I remember buying a 2012 RE 500 Classic and putting a sidecar on it. GPS 103 kph flat out with a tail wind downhill was about it's top speed. Besides from the fuel injection and front disc it was basically still a 1950s bike. I put some knobbies, a bash plate and led lights on it and it was a great adventure bike. I loved it.
